THANKS again for your continued patience as we work through this process.

Hank Cardello exposes his insider knowledge about how we got “stuffed”

People often ask me how I find so many excellent podcast interview guests and the answer is I’m not afraid to ask. In my daily research for my blog, I’m constantly coming across new authors and researchers who would be outstanding candidates for an interview. Occasionally, some of my fellow low-carb bloggers will write about a new diet or health book they have read and that will trigger a desire to get them on my podcast.

One such example of this was this April 2009 blog post by Dr. Mike Eades where he discussed a book that explains how “the various arms of the food industry–food manufacturers, grocery stores and restaurants–all work hand in hand to make us fat. The government is in there, too, always making the wrong moves and usually making the situation worse.” After reading Dr. Mike’s commentary on this book, I just knew I had to get the author on my podcast for an interview–and he’s here with us today.

In Episode 268 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from Hank Cardello, a former food and beverage marketing executive who had a “wake-up call” when he thought he had leukemia. Although this scare turned out to be benign, Cardello started on a crusade to expose the things food manufacturers are doing to damage the weight and health of their consumers–some of it unwittingly. He wrote a book entitled Stuffed: An Insider’s Look At Who’s (Really) Making America Fat that is one of the most incredible eye-opening books about what is going on behind-the-scenes of food companies, restaurants, grocery stores, and anyone marketing food to you. Whether you realize it or not, everything you see that makes you want to buy food and beverages is orchestrated by some executives in a board room somewhere trying to figure out how to get people to buy more. It’s Capitalism 101 and there’s nothing wrong with a business seeking to be profitable.

But the problem comes in when there is little attention paid to the unintended consequences of marketing foods that are not exactly the best choices when it comes to controlling weight gain and preventable diseases. Listen to Hank Cardello talk about why he is so passionate about getting corporations to be more responsible, who else is complicit in this problem besides the food manufacturers and distributors, the manipulations made by fast food, convenience stores, and grocery stores, the “health halo” that surrounds some companies like Whole Foods and Subway, what’s wrong with the food labeling, how you can still eat healthy without overshooting your budget, the trend happening with offering healthier options, the perception of offering better choices to consumers, and the interesting future trends that are coming in the food industry. This is one thought-provoking podcast interview you don’t want to miss!
